Afterthoughts of the London Blast

Saturday, July 9th, 2005

I’ve woken up early in the morning last Thursday for a brief period. While checking my email messages, I’ve read one from the mailing list of Ninja Tune’s Solid Steel radio show. The subject reads “Solid Steel Tonight is CANCELLED.” Within the body of the message, it stated the following:

Tonights Solid Steel in London at Ruby Lo is cancelled due to the events in central London this morning.

Please keep safe and spare a thought for those that have been caught up in this terrible situation.

Peace.

Events in London this morning? Terrible situation? My first instinct was to open up a web browser and go straight to the CNN web site. Then I saw the headline:

TERROR ROCKS CENTRAL LONDON

At that point, the official toll was that 2 people were dead, with more fatalities expected. I’ve then scanned through other news sites–BBC, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, the Guardian.

As the hours wore on, more fatalities were confirmed, and the extent of the tragedy continued to unfold. Eyewitness accounts were being told; pictures were telling even more than words can fanthom.

I’ve originally wrote most of this entry on the day of the event. Since then, the official fatality count has risen to 50. Another 700 people were injured.

I imagine that Londoners, and the whole of the UK, have been glued all day on the day of the explosions, just as I was glued during both the unfolding and aftermath of the attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. The similarities seem to be there–transportation infrastructure during the start of the business day were targeted in crowded locations; numerous horror stories of the dead, the missing, and desperate people looking for answers about their loves ones; people banding together to help out one another in need.

I know of many of you who work in and around London, and it is for this reason that I, too, share your concern and pain.

I was in London in early 2003. I remember the Liverpool Station, being one of the main hubs that I’ve used to get around the city. I also remember the Kings Cross station, as I was meeting Chris from Zero dB upon my arrival. I also marvel, in general, of how orderly the crowds of people stream through and about the various stations…something that has to be seen if you are not used to such things. It’s an efficient system, it’s a familiar system.

But somebody has violated that space. And though they’ve done so, it hasn’t seem to have shaken the resolve of people who needed to get to work, tour the city, see loved ones. The explosion has taken lives, and may change many for years to come, perhaps forever; yet, the city goes on. Life goes on. And a determined resolve ensures that the people of London will pull through this, just as the citizens in this country have done.

Brothers and sisters of London, my condolences to you and yours.

A Week Late, But More To Say

Wednesday, July 6th, 2005

I don’t suppose I’m going to have a clone of me made to keep the blog updated, will I? Well, of course not. For better or worse, there’s only one me. I’ve kept you waiting for awhile as I’ve meandered in and out of this-and-that. So hopefully, this will catch you up to speed on the goings-on.

As you might have noticed, the July chart has been posted for all to see. In the near future, I’m going to really try hard to do mini-reviews of the picks in question. After all, many of you out there really don’t have a clue as to what you’re being asked to check out. But rest assured that if you are a fan of the radioshow, then the picks I put out there for you are worth your time.

Thanks a plenty for checking out the music of late. Many of you are, and I hope that you’re enjoying the music. Hope, too, that you’ve enjoyed the Bugz In the Attic interview/profile. It was a great deal of fun, and I’m pleased to share it with you.

There are still some loose ends from Miami. My interview with Jurgen from Jazzanova, which was originally slated to air on the radio show, will instead be transcribed and published in an upcoming edition of the online zine Mundovibes. Keep your eyes open here on when the article will be published. The Loue Vega interview is presently still a question mark, as I’ve yet to receive the raw interview footage that was recorded. I hope to have more details coming soon.

Part One of the Halfway Rewind Special is now online. The focus is on albums I recommend that were released during the first six months of 2005 thus far. Soon, I’ll have brief writeups on each album that was aired. There are also a few others that weren’t allowed to fit into the show due to the obvious limitations of time, but I will list those too. Some choice reissues and compilations will also be included.

KCPR is a cool place to be, as there’s always an eclectic blend of interesting music and fine shows to catch. One show of note that you should check out when you have a moment is called Global Grooves. For about three years, Jennifer has been mixing some of the finest in world fusion and downtempo sounds from around the globe. “No passport required” is the motto, and indeed the musical journey is well worth it from those who have appreciated her blend. No beatmatching here…just a wondrous flow to make you happy. Check her show out before mine, live on Fridays from 8-9pm on KCPR. You can also listen via the station’s livestream. Don’t sleep!

Another show on the station that may be worth your time is a live dance mix show that we do called Club 91. Co-hosted by DJ Loco and yours truly, we do our best to play different styles and beats to keep things interesting. It’s a cool thing, as I get to go back to my vinyl/CD collection, as well as drop music that normally wouldn’t fit on Urban Landscapes. You may hear a bunch of Detriot-influenced glitchiness one week, Latin house the next, and then maybe drum n’bass the week after that. You never know what I’ll spin, because frankly I don’t know myself until a mere few hours before airtime. We’re on Saturday nights from 9-midnight Pacific. Check us out either on-air at KCPR 91.3 FM in San Luis Obispo, or via our livestream.

While my turntable skills aren’t entirely flawless, I think it’s good enough that I’m comfy with putting some of the recent mixes I’ve done online for you to listen to. So feel free to check this one out, and send me your feedback. I’m going to do my best to have at least two mixes a month for you to check out.

That’s it, for now. Check Part Two of the Halfway Rewind Special later this week. Until then, be good!
