The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 10.4

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

On January 12th, there was a posting on the Beyondjazz website, something like Alice Coltrane, R.I.P. (??) The posting apparently came from the blog of L.A. based producer Flying Lotus, who I’d learn later on was a nephew to Alice Coltrane. Hours had passed by, and a few overseas music news outlets had picked up the story. It wasn’t until nearly the next day that the major U.S. news outlets confirmed her death.

I honestly have not listened to a great deal of Alice Coltrane and her music, but the hat was tipped to her from radio and jazz luminaries worldwide. She was very much known far more than just being Mrs. John Coltrane, even though they were only married for two years. Her talents have amazed many, and her spirit has been felt by many who have not only listened to her work, but have been lucky to have seen her live. The piano…the organ…the harp….she’s proven herself again and again, so says those who followed her work. To start off this week’s show, Urban Landscapes, too, tips the hat off to the one and only Alice Coltrane.

A bit of a shift happens shortly thereafter, with the week’s Urban Landscapes Guestmix coming from Jean-Paul Bondy. He’s released a full-length album last year for Compost Records called The Path of Most Resistors, which was on my recent Most Recommended list of albums for 2006. He’s come up with a dark, bass-and-beat heavy mix of spacey sounds and broodling vibes. Check it.

And toward the end, some cool new music to be had. So enjoy the show, and will catch you next week!

The Most Recommended Music of 2006 - The Final List

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

Okay, the final list of 2006 is now here. It’s been awhile and took some time to put together, but in the end I’m cool with it.

The criteria for the list are the following:

1. This is not a “top” whatever list; it’s way too cumbersome to try and sort out the “best” by ranking. So in lieu of this, what I feel represents what musically did justice for 2006 are on the list. To clarify, each list is not ranked in any order of preference.

2. All the music on the lists have been released either overseas or in the U.S. between December 2005 and December 2006, and were played on the show.

3. Generally speaking, only music that has been submitted to the show by labels, artists and promoters are considered for the list. There are very few exceptions to this rule that are listed at my discretion. Big thanks to those who have lent musical support for the show, which helps facilitate spreading the music to as many listeners as possible.

And now without further ado, here it is…

The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 10.3

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

This week’s broadcast features, as always, some of the coolest music on planet Earth. But if that’s not enough for you, then how about a brand spanking new Urban Landscapes Guestmix from DJ Nova?

Yes, DJ Nova is at it again with a new mix–this time, to coincide with his first compilation on Prominence called Night & Day. As some of you may know, he holds down some dope late-night programming on Rodon FM 95 out of Serres, Greece on Wednesdays and Fridays during the wee hours. He’s also a very busy DJ who’s built a solid reputation for his own approach to showcasing quality music.

The other news that I’m really excited about is to give big thanks to the newest carrier of Urban Landscapes, the Giant Step web site. Shouts to the New York crew that includes Mehmet, Jay, and Maurice…and I gotta give shouts to Adam, also part of the crew but making his home out-of-state. Of course, a big welcome to those of you picking up the show via the Jukebox.

With that, it’s time to bid you a weekend of warmth and goodness…catch y’all next week!

Last night’s show is due to be online within the next few days. Meanwhile…

Last week’s show is now online…finally! Technical glitches have been worked out, though you might notice little bits here and there.

Last week’s broadcast features the first Urban Landscapes Guestmix of 2007, an exclusive from Stefan Goldmann. He’s really been making a name for himself in recent years on labels such as Classic, Ovum, and most recently Dixon’s Innervisions label with the well-received Sleepy Hollow EP. The mix is an exclusive to the show, so big thanks to him for doing the deed. Watch out for his new label Macro coming this spring!

Enjoy the show…more coming soon. Have a good weekend!

The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 10.1

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

Happy New Year to everyone.

As of this week, Urban Landscapes is now nine years running. The show started on the first week of January back in 1998, and has evolved into what you are listening to now. So here’s to another year of good music.

As most of us celebrated the holidays, a huge loss in the world of music occurred. James Brown, who’s been known as many thing…Godfather of Soul being one of them…pass away early Christmas morning at the age of 73. In the true sense of his reputation for being the “hardest working man in show business,” he was scheduled to perform New Year’s Eve at B.B. King’s club in New York.

For good or bad in the mind of those who have worked with him over the years, there’s little doubt that James Brown has left a historical and lasting contribution to the world of music that’s still being felt in modern music. As some of us look back on his life, including yours truly, he’s led a life large in many ways. In his honor, part of the show focuses on some of the music that he’s created during the 60’s and 70’s, including a few from other artists on his label People.

Meanwhile, music old and new are featured on this extended edition of the show, kicking off the new year. I hope you make yours a great one.

Lots more on the way, so stay tuned.
