The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 10.31

Friday, August 10th, 2007

On this week’s show, you’re getting three hours. I’ve made good use of that third hour, too, as it’s devoted to the music of pioneering Nigerian musician, producer, and political activist Fela Kuti.

Alongside important contributors such as his musical director Tony Allen, Fela Kuti has developed the Afrobeat sound that most of us know and enjoy today. Not many know about how extensive his contribution to music has been (some 50-plus releases during his career), and of the circumstances behind it. He was a tireless political activist in his home of Nigeria, and was a frequent target of the country’s corrupt government militia for a good portion of his life there. The politics in his music was unmistakable, his resolve unwavering, and the price he paid very heavy.

It was 10 years ago last week that Fela Kuti passed away, a victim of the HIV epidemic that has decimated 1/4 of the African population. Perhaps the closest artist of his stature would be that of Jamaican artist Bob Marley, but Kuti’s recognition has been posthumous for the most part.

The set ends with Seun Kuti, the last of Fela’s sons. Alongside his father’s band Egypt 80 (known as Africa 70 during the 1970’s), Seun Kuti capably carries the torch of the spirit of his father’s music.

I hope you enjoy the tribute, and enjoy this week’s extended edition of the show. Back at you next week…peace.

The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 10.29

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Ah yes, a little weirdness here. A tale of woe beckons as you listen to the show, which should have came out awhile back. The live show was not recorded,  and the playlist went missing. So in fact, I can’t quite duplicate the show in a way that would do it justice.

In place of it, I give you a shortened show and some extra-long mixes. The first is a 20-minute megamix from Bob Henzell. You may know him doing remixes for the likes of Landslide and Jose James (the latter was some bootleg action). He’s managed to put together a megamix, and I was given it last June. So finally, you’ll get to hear it here.

The other thing you get to hear is an exclusive guestmix from Kelli Hand. Known first to the music world as K-Hand, she’s one of the pioneers who helped forge a pathway for women to enter the world of DJ and music production. She was inspired by New York parties such as the Paradise Garage, and developed her craft over many years by working alongside some of the legends of Detroit techno and house. She’s done a number of music productions and remixes, has DJ’ed out, and has been running her own Acacia label. She’s still at it today, and was gracious enough to do an exclusive mix for the show…a bit of classic house through and through.

Be sure to give the show a listen this week, as there’s quite a bit of music to share with you. Stay good, and will catch you next time.

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

All you beatmakers out there take note:

Far Out’s latest signing Zeep have just released their debut album ‘Nina Miranda and Chris Franck present Zeep’. Former members of Brazilian influenced acts Smoke City and Da Lata, Zeep are inspired by the attitude of the 70s when music was live, urgent, right-on, scruffy, funky and folksy.

So whether you’re a budding producer/remixer or a veteran in the scene, this is a perfect opportunity to have your music released. We welcome all genres of remix styles from lo-fi folk-funk, samba cancao to minimal techno. Originality is the key!

1XTRA DJ Benji B will be judging the competition . 2 runners up will receive 10 free CDs/vinyl of their choice.

To sign up and learn more about how to enter this competition please visit

Update on Straight No Chaser Magazine

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

Peeps,
We’re a few days into August 2007, and it’s almost zero hour for the print edition of the UK’s Straight No Chaser magazine. In case you’re unaware, the esteemed publication will put out its final print issue this month after a good 20-year run.

Paul Bradshaw, founder, publisher and the pillar of the magazine, has posted an update on the Beyondjazz community. I thought it would be cool sharing it with you. Visit the site to follow the topic thread.

Keep your eyes out for the final issue, as there’s sure to be heavy demand for it once it hits the streets.

Have a good week; peace.

Greetings… Paul Brad of Chaser HQ checking in… sorry guys, but I’m a a bit lazy when it comes to browsing the web forums… however, I was googling some Chaser runnings when I came across this forum and had to check “the end of Chaser” posts…i’ve had lots of mails re. the end of the mag (as we’ve known it) and most are really, really moving… similarly the posts here show a lot of love for what we (as a community)have achieved.

Basically, we’ve always maintained high standards and an accumulative debt over the past period has made it neccessary to wind the mag down. Ironically, we’d been talking amongst the crew about where the mag needed to go in order to negotiate the future and in a way, it’s a pity that it’s the finacial situation that has finally forced us to change.

Also, apologies to the brother whose sub always arrived late… that was due to cutting cost and we ended up using a mailing set up that was badly wrong. Poor Jez who does the subs got enough flak during that period.

Anyway… as Max Romeo (or was it Lenin) said: “One Step Forward Two Step Backward.”. Yes, we have to wind down to wind back up.

The crew… which includes guys (some of who seem to post here regularly) like Amar & Raggy + Max Cole and Chris ‘Myspace’ Tranton are keen to get busy and develop the Chaser on-line and bring it upto speed with the times. We’ll do that once we’ve put to bed this final slamming magazine.

Yes, my friends, this mag will be slamming… out with a bang not a whimper…

Lots of nu-skool bizniz… Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Jose James, Empirical, El Michels Affair, Trackademiks, Yo Majesty, Elan Mehler, Mowgli, Aaron Jerome…

Artworks from Mephisto, Brad Howe, Andy Ward, Mitchy Bwoy, Matt ‘Monkey Boxer’ Bailey

Swifty will choose his fave spreads… covers…

Big f-off feature on Shelter NYC… very Dingwalls…

Nice photo story from Chris Franko on the Brooklyn Empire roller rink…

Plus news and tings from Shuya Okino, Max Cole, Louie Vega and, of course, GP.

So, it’s looking pretty damn fresh… it’s been built on the spirit of improvisation… so the Fredom Principle prevails.

This week I will set up a thing on the Chaser website where you can order the final issue and ensure that the final ediition drops through your door. Watch out for that. As many of you have pointed out the mag can be a bit elusive… but that’s because it’s a small-ish print run that is spread to the four corners of the world.

As, to the future… I’ll endeavour to keep you posted. Definitely got a few ideas up my sleeve.

Respect.. a luta continua!

Paul Brad

PS: I’m feeling the new Sleepwalker album, a new hip hop Cd from Zimbabwe Legit (remember them?), the Elan Mehler on Brownswood. The Jose James LP is sounded good… live , he was well cool! Hypnotics mashed it up at the North Sea - look out for a 12″ via Honest Jons + love the post-Light Of Saba LP Honest Jons have done… anyway…. enuff & laters!! But wait… greeetings Velanche!

The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 10.30

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

It’s not your imagination…this is show 10.30. 10.29 needs to be redone, but the playlist has been misplaced. I hope to find it very soon and get the show out to ya, so please be patient.

This week’s broadcast is a bit of a departure. In spite of the fact
that I have quite a bit of upfront music in the pipeline, there’s a
pile of guest mixes to get out of the way. So why not double the fun?

With
that comes two guestmixes on this week’s show. The first comes from
Chris Franck, half of the new musical project called Zeep. The other
half is Nina Miranda, and together they’ve conceived a full-length
project for the Far Out label. The album is out now, and has influences
of rock, samba, Brazilian and related sounds. Franck’s mix, itself, is
an eclectic one full of such influences. That’s for the first hour.

Hour
Two is a more uptempo mix from Wagon Cookin. The Spanish duo have been
producing music for a number of years, as well as having a hand in some
acclaimed remixes. The mix that they’ve done comes on the heels of the
double-CD album “2Faces” for Compost Records; in fact, a number of
tunes from the album are included in the mix, as well as unreleased
goodies.

So take the music inward and enjoy; more to savor on next week’s show.
