The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 11.32 with Exclusive Me Raabenstein Guestmix

Friday, October 31st, 2008

The end of October has arrive, which means a mere two months before 2008 comes to a close. There’s still Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays around the corner, but people here in the States seem to be a long ways off from thinking about such things. The two most paramount things that seem to be on the minds of the public are the economic roller coaster that’s a big shot across the bow, and the U.S. elections that’s happening next Tuesday. It’s a bit of a crazy, yes indeed.

Here’s hoping that this week’s music will ease the crazies a bit. And if that’s not crazy enough, I have a crazy, leftfield guestmix coming this week from Me Raabenstein of Nonine Recordings in Vienna, Austria. You’ve heard some of the music from the label played on the show in the past, and the producer was kind enough to offer up a mix of music from the label’s roster. It’s an exclusive to the show, inna no-nonsense, Nonine style.

Enjoy the show, and I’ll be back atcha next week.

Soundcloud and Tunecore - Digital Music Services for the Independent Artist

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

UPDATE - 29 October 2008: Alex from Soundcloud wanted me to let peeps know that Soundcloud is now available to the public. This is a correction from what I’ve originally written that new users needed an invite.

The music industry, under the model it’s been using for many decades, is fighting for its survival amidst a wave of defections from consumers tired of feeling treated like children.

A new model has yet to reign, but a number of them are out there vying for the attention of not only the consumer, but for independent artists and labels as well. Digital media is allowing anyone to create music and put it out there for the world to listen. Still, the artist will only be known to maybe a few of their friends unless they know a way to get them noticed to a wider audience.

Tunecore is a relatively new service that helps the independent artist out in a big; the service is a virtual “middleman” between the artist and the online music stores. Whereas an artist has to visit each online store to get his or her music ready to be sold, Tunecore will get the music onto multiple online stores at once. There’s a lot more to Tunecore besides being a one-stop digital distribution center, including assistance with artist promotion, among other things. The MP3 Insider, a CNET podcast about digital players and music, has done a special episode interviewing Jeff Price, the founder of Tunecore. He explains how the service works in a way that’s easy to grasp. People in independent music, as well as aspiring musicians, should have a listen to an informative and enlightening discussion with host Donald Bell.

Another online service that’s making waves is Soundcloud, which has launched its site this month after a private beta period. It’s hard to believe that many of the artists played on the radio show are also members of Soundcloud (some of them are even part of the company). It’s an online community and service where artists can post their tunes online for others to listen to. If you’re tired of using YouSendIt, Mediafire, or similar services that have restrictions and limits, Soundcloud allows tunes to be uploaded with no size limits and can be as permanent as you want it to be. The free service allows five song uploads a month, while three tiers of Pro plans offer anywhere from 15-50 tunes/month.

You can visit one of the members to listen to available tunes and leave comments.

View the video to learn below more about Soundcloud. Membership is now available. As for Tunecore, there is no video. But feel free to browse through its “tour” page.

So check out these services; hope they become useful for you!

The Indian Summer has hit the coastal town of San Luis Obispo, California, home of the radioshow. It’s unbelievable that the temperature has reached 97 degrees farenheit. I’m not complaining at all; the weather has been really spectacular.

No matter how the weather has been where you are, I hope that you’ve had a good week. This week’s show has, per usual, plenty of newness to share. Be it soul, hip-hop, house, downbeat or rock (yes folks, rock…or at least that of the groovy kind), hopefully there’s something that will quench your everlasting musical thirst.

There’s new content I’m planning to put on the site, but I’ve been a bit slammed (what else is new?). I’m working that out, and hopefully some will make by the end of this weekend.

Meanwhile, if you haven’t subscribed to the podcast, you should! Just visit the show’s site (if you’re not there, already) and click on one of the banners on the right sidebar. If you’ve subscribed to the show via iTunes, I would really, really appreciate it if you could leave a comment on iTunes. I know that quite a few of you out there have subscribed this way, so some good words can grease the wheel to get more peeps to listen. I thank you.

If you are on Facebook, you should know that the radioshow has a fan page. If you enjoy the show, it’ll be great for me to take a peek of those of you out there representing the worldwide audience. Be counted and show your support as a fan!

Lastly, gotta give shouts to the peeps at Fusicology for adding the Urban Landscapes Radioshow to its list of radioshows and podcasts that it support. It’s celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, and Aysa and the crew should be commended for doing all they can to promote the music, as well as the events supporting it.

I hope that you have a great weekend, and I’ll catch you next week!

ABF’s Weekly music review 10/23/08: RAS G

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

12 forward moving tracks. ‘Ghetto Sci-Fi’ by Ras G and the Afrikan Space Program have carved out a real fun album. There are real good dub undertones mixed with a love of the sci-fi(my favorite thing number 28). THere is a good use of soundbytes that tell an explorative story bringing back memories of old Sun RA clips. The Track that sealed the album for me was track 6 ‘Jackie’; good use of strings, not too complex and busy, it just bangs!

So if you are about preserving the use of Vinyl as a medium for classic music, try todays future classics.

The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 11.30

Friday, October 17th, 2008

It’s not your imagination; you didn’t miss show 11.29 from last week. It’s been in wait to be re-recorded, and I’ve just been flat out busy. I plan to do the deed this weekend, and hope to have it posted by early next week.

Also, I’ve found some interesting info over the last week or so. I plan to blog about them by the next show, so keep your eyes on the site.

Last item before I leave you; let’s take a moment of silence to honor Levi Stubbs, the lead vocalist for the famed Motown quartet the Four Tops. Not much needs to be said about the group, reaping the benefits from the songwriting powerhouse of Dozier-Holland-Dozier. Stubbs definitely had the voice, and knew very much how to use it through over three decades in the biz. R.I.P., sir.

Meanwhile, take in the beauty that is this week’s show, and I’ll catch you next week.
