Monday, September 1st, 2008

Shout-outs to NYC-based singer/songwriter/activist Nanette Natal (introduced to my ears on Raggy’s Off Limits Radio show), who sent me a message on the show’s Myspace, asking me to check out one of her most recent videos for the tune “Six Years Down.” The song is from her 2007 album I Must Be Dreaming. The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 11.25 - Summer Blowout

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Time for one last go-around before definitely packing it in for the summer. Between the time I took the impromptu summer break and now, the good music has been piling up. Just as I was planning out the Isaac Hayes tribute special last week, I realized that it would have been a cryin’ shame to have the new music pushed aside due to time limitations and the like.

So to make up for the wait that you, the passionate Urban Landscapes listeners, have patiently endured, I’ve decided to drop by our fine radio station and present a three-hour edition of the show. I wasn’t able to get everything I wanted to into the show; for instance, the Stacy Epps album whose promo I’ve just gotten hold of mere hours before the show (and that I said that I’d play later during this week’s broadcast) will have to wait until I return. But there’s plenty, and I do mean plenty, of quality music from all around. You want funk, reggae, house, hip-hop, or jazz? It’s all here, and then some.

Gotta fly, but will be back atcha you again come mid-September. And please, spread the word about the show to whomever you feel will dig the sounds. Peace.

Audio Player and Download Links Now Available on Previous 2008 Shows

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Well the audio player/download links combo worked so well, I’ve decided to spend a surprisingly short amount of time adding them to all of the previous 2008 shows (11.01-11.24).

The quickest way to find the previous shows is to use the Search box at the top of the right sidebar on the show’s home page, and enter the show number (or whatever helps to make it easier for you). Please make sure that you use the Search feature from the home page; otherwise, you may get stuck with a page error.

Hope this helps you out; enjoy the shows! I will keep you posted on adding the goods at the bottom of the playlists for 2006 and 2007.

New Audio Player Added For Each Show - Check It Out!

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Greets.

I’ve sorta been working on this on and off for awhile, and until tonight haven’t been able to figured out how to make things play nice. It’s funny sometimes how I can leave something I’m stuck on alone for a few months, return to it and then make everything work smoothly. Well such is the case tonight, and I’m pleased to let you know about this.

From this point forward (including the last two shows), scrolling to the bottom of the page of each playlist will allow you to view an audio player, as well as some download links, for each show. These are additional features for your convenience. If you use iTunes, Feedburner, or Feedblitz, things should work fine. If you experience issues relating to either listening or downloading the show, please let me know.

Also, I will add the player for all of the 2008 shows, as well as the 2007 and 2006 shows when time permits.

Please enjoy, and comments are welcome.

The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 11.24 - Isaac Hayes Tribute Special

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Singer, songwriter, composer, producer, arranger…these are only a few of the hats worn by Isaac Hayes. Few of us today know how much history he has made before the release of his debut album Presenting Isaac Hayes in 1967 for Stax Recordings, a label that has solidified itself as a formidable competitor to Motown Records. The raw and unadulterated “Memphis” sound would chip away at the smooth and polished “Motown sound” from the mid-1960’s onward, thanks in no small part to Hayes’s long association with Stax. Having started out as a session musician, his successful partnership with David Porter had amassed hundreds of tunes written, some would end up becoming enduring R&B classics.

Most people know those tunes better than that of Hayes’s most creative musical period, from the late 1960’s through the mid-1970’s. On this week’s edition of the show, it’s a commemoration of those peak years in the life and music of Isaac Hayes. Truly one who went on a path that differs from most of his R&B contemporaries, his was a legacy that has endured through today, as evident by the many hip-hop producers who have sampled his work.

There really isn’t more to be said; the music will speak for itself.

R.I.P., Isaac Hayes (Aug. 20, 1942-Aug 10, 2008)

Special Urban Landscapes This Week - A Tribute to Isaac Hayes

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

There isn’t much to bring me out from my self-imposed time off from the radio show, but this weekend brings about one way of me doing so.

The word is still spreading that vocalist, musician and producer Isaac Hayes has died today at the relatively young age of 65. He was still active in music, and it’s a irony that he was found unconscious next to a running treadmill.

This week, I’ll present a special edition of Urban Landscapes on Isaac Hayes; mostly his music, but also some tidbits on his extraordinary career. Please join me, or find the podcast shortly thereafter.

I’ll leave you with two versions of his groundbreaking classic “Theme From Shaft.” Enjoy, and rest in peace Isaac.

The first version is a live recording back in 1973. I don’t have any info on where this recording took place, so let me know if you do.

The last one is a special version of the theme, as conducted by Hayes during the Conan O’Brien Show just last year.
