The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 11.25 - Summer Blowout

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Time for one last go-around before definitely packing it in for the summer. Between the time I took the impromptu summer break and now, the good music has been piling up. Just as I was planning out the Isaac Hayes tribute special last week, I realized that it would have been a cryin’ shame to have the new music pushed aside due to time limitations and the like.

So to make up for the wait that you, the passionate Urban Landscapes listeners, have patiently endured, I’ve decided to drop by our fine radio station and present a three-hour edition of the show. I wasn’t able to get everything I wanted to into the show; for instance, the Stacy Epps album whose promo I’ve just gotten hold of mere hours before the show (and that I said that I’d play later during this week’s broadcast) will have to wait until I return. But there’s plenty, and I do mean plenty, of quality music from all around. You want funk, reggae, house, hip-hop, or jazz? It’s all here, and then some.

Gotta fly, but will be back atcha you again come mid-September. And please, spread the word about the show to whomever you feel will dig the sounds. Peace.

The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 11.24 - Isaac Hayes Tribute Special

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Singer, songwriter, composer, producer, arranger…these are only a few of the hats worn by Isaac Hayes. Few of us today know how much history he has made before the release of his debut album Presenting Isaac Hayes in 1967 for Stax Recordings, a label that has solidified itself as a formidable competitor to Motown Records. The raw and unadulterated “Memphis” sound would chip away at the smooth and polished “Motown sound” from the mid-1960’s onward, thanks in no small part to Hayes’s long association with Stax. Having started out as a session musician, his successful partnership with David Porter had amassed hundreds of tunes written, some would end up becoming enduring R&B classics.

Most people know those tunes better than that of Hayes’s most creative musical period, from the late 1960’s through the mid-1970’s. On this week’s edition of the show, it’s a commemoration of those peak years in the life and music of Isaac Hayes. Truly one who went on a path that differs from most of his R&B contemporaries, his was a legacy that has endured through today, as evident by the many hip-hop producers who have sampled his work.

There really isn’t more to be said; the music will speak for itself.

R.I.P., Isaac Hayes (Aug. 20, 1942-Aug 10, 2008)

The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 11.23

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Greetings to all…

I have before you last week’s edition of the show, featuring a great cross section of fresh new music from here, there and everywhere. It’s up a bit late, but better later than never…so enjoy the show.

For now, it’s time to bid you adieu. Being that I’m on a bit of an overload, it’s time to start to put a few things to bed and get some other things in place. To that end, I find it best to put the show on hold until September. Believe it or not, it does take more than just simply playing good music. I’m very dedicated to what I do, and I believe in the power of touching others through music in my own way. I have a desire to do it 100 percent, or not at all. And at least for the next six weeks or so, it’s time to put 100 percent into other things for now. Fear not, because the show will return as strong as ever. If all does work out, I hope to have some new things in place.

No promises, but I think that I may get away with some surprise podcasts that will feature all-new music during my hiatus. The good music seems to never stop coming, and I’m very grateful for that. I wouldn’t like it to pile up and fall by the waste side, so I’ll find ways to incorporate them.

Thanks for those of you leaving feedback on the site, and for sending me nice messages via Facebook or email. It’s a privilege, and so long as good music keeps being made I will continue to do my best to share them with you. Also, big thanks to the labels, artists and producers, the promoters, and most of all to the fans.

Catch you on the other side come September.

The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 11.22

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

Now that the Halfway Rewind Special is behind us, it’s time to dive into new music territory. The show starts off with more jazz than usual, but trust me when I say that it’s a great stretch of jazz for you to savor. Of course, other styles and blends are covered as well.

One correction I should point out as you’re listening to the show. I’ve erroneously announced a Natalie Walker track. In fact, the tune I Decided (King Britt FiveSix Mix) was from Solange.

That’s all, for now. Enjoy the show; back atcha this week!

The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 11.21 - The 2008 Halfway Rewind Special Part Two: The Singles and EP’s

Friday, July 4th, 2008

It’s high time to put the first half of 2008 behind us. As I was out last week, it’s good to return to give you most of the singles and EP’s from the year so far that I recommend for you to check out and support. It’s the second part of the Halfway Rewind Special, and it turns out that not all that I wanted to get into the show could be accomodated, even if the show stretched once again to three hours.

I hope you enjoy this week’s show. Next week comes a whole lot of fresh new music, so stay tuned.

The Urban Landscapes Radioshow 11.20 - The 2008 Halfway Rewind Special Part One: The Albums

Friday, June 20th, 2008

UPDATE 22 June 2008: Some corrections were made on the playlist. Thanks to Rocky Rococo for pointing out my error in one of the tracks from “Disco Not Disco.” The James White and the Blacks track was incorrect; the correct track was from Isotope. Some other minor corrections were made, as well.

This week presents one of my favorite shows of the year. It’s the half way mark of 2008, and it’s time to look back and pick out those albums presented on the show that I recommend to you, the selective and picky music consumer. There’s an overload of music in the world these days, thanks in large part to the advent of digital downloads, legal and otherwise.

If you’re like many a music fan, you’ve been sick and tired of being spoonfed crappy music. I do my best to be one of the filters, bringing you music that I feel holds up over time. Mind you, it’s only a tiny spectrum of great music in the world, but one can only focus on so much in a two-hour span each week. It’s best if shows are self-contained in a niche. In the case of Urban Landscapes, it’s jazzy and soulful club culture. But not just any kind of soul, and not just any kind of jazz. You know this, you recognize this, and you’re feeling the goods.

Being overwhelmed and missing out is never a good thing. So time to catch you up on the music that can potentially slip between the cracks. It’s the Halfway Rewind Special, presented to you in two parts. The first week–this week’s show–focuses on the albums, while next week’s show (the second part) wil hone in on the singles and EP’s.

One of the most important criteria I look at when picking albums is that I need to listen to the whole album. It can be challenging at times when music stacks up in the queue. Somehow, though, it gets done. To that end, there are a few albums I’ve played on the show recently that have not been released yet that are not part of the list. It could be that an album hasn’t been listened to in its entirety yet; you could end up finding them on the year-end show.

Also, I tend to miss an album or two that I forget to bring to play for the special. There are two albums of note, and I will tack them on at the bottom of the playlist so that you can look them up and check them out.

Enjoy this week’s three-hour edition of the show; I’ll catch you again next week.
