I was out last week; apologies for that. It means that there’s much to make up for on this week’s show.

As my voice goes dark this week, there are some fresh new sounds abound. But first, a belated tip of the hat to J. Dilla, who passed away four years ago last month, just days after his 32nd birthday. His influence continues long after the passing of this esteemed hip-hop producer, as witness by the loving project that Carlos Nino and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson cooked up last year; from the well-received EP to the critically-acclaimed concerts that followed, with an orchestra no less, Dilla lives on.

Then the show ends with two seminal soul classics by soul crooners The Dramatics. Ron Banks, one of the original members, has passed away last week at age 58. He was part of a great vocal group, and so it’s time to honor him by playing the music that touched so many R&B fans around the globe.

Sandwiched in between those and some great new tracks is this week’s guestmix, which is more like a mixtape. It comes from Mademoiselle Caro and Frank Garcia, who has a forthcoming album on Buzzin’ Fly. The first EP to coincide with the album, “Soldiers,” is due out soon on the label, and the duo put together a selection of mainly acoustic favorites. It’s a good one for people who love music, so hopefully you’ll enjoy it.

Next week, it’s 4/4 beats coming back full-on. Have a good one, and will catch you then.

Peace.

<itunes:summary>Apologies for leaving you hanging last week; got kicked around with something inside of me that needed to come out. Now that I'm over it, it's time to sort you out with plenty of fresh music that's accumulated over the past few weeks.

Enjoy this week's selection, and I'll be back with more next week. Peace.

Welcome to February 2010, and this week’s show is gonna be a little bit of a shake-up. I get to stay in the background for the most part, as two guestmixes will occupy most of the show.

The first guestmix comes from Me Raabenstein, producer and founder of Vienna’s Nonine Recordings. You’ve heard music from the label before; very leftfield vibes with very eclectic sounds, at one point leaning toward beats, while at others pulling in classical influences. You will hear those and more in his latest mix that airs on the show this week.

The other mix comes from Gerry O’Rourke, producer and founder of the Foundation Music label in the UK. Like that of Raa, I’ve played guestmixes from Gerry before, and he’s done a mix that compliment the first one well. It’s also very eclectic and musical, touching on different styles and melodies.

I thank them both for sending the mixes my way, and I hope you’ll enjoy them as well. Back next week with a new selection of goodies.

Til then, best wishes for your week ahead. Peace.

This week, it’s time to unload the goods.

For most of the show, you’ll get house, house and more house. Certainly a variety of house, but most with the soul and essence that you come to expect from the show. It’s a mix of holdovers from last year, alongside forthcoming releases. Also in the mix are some broken beats, funky breaks, and a game-changer for the week’s show at the end.

It’s an uptempo affair, so get ready to move!

You want more? Check out an exclusive mix I’ve done for DJ Offbeat’s Soul Funktion Radio outta Brooklyn, NY. It’s something I’ve whipped up last December, but is airing on the show this week. Please note that I’ve botched up on the web address during my show this week. Visit the Future History of House site for the mix. After Wednesday of next week, search the archive on the site for my mix. Big ups to DJ Offbeat for the opportunity, as well as the positive props while on-air during his show. I’ll have more mixes on other radios shows, to be announced soon.

Okay, gotta go! More info on the new weekly I’m involved with here in SLO next week. (The first one was off the chain last week!)

Peace.

Welcome to 2010; you’ve made it with me!

Welcome, also, to the 13th year of Urban Landscapes, launched on the first week of January of 1998. I’m very pleased that you have been keeping up with the show, and I”m very privileged to continue to bring you the quality music you are enjoying week after week.

There’s an abundance of new music to get to, and you’ll get to hear some of it this week. As plans go, however, the night before the live show brought news of the death of Teddy Pendergrass, undisputedly one of the finest soul singers of the 1970’s. His powerful voice has pretty much made the group Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes the fine group that it was, as well as his enduring relationship with esteemed producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, pillars at the Philadelphia International label, responsible for much of the best soul music of that period.

The music of Teddy Pendergrass was in many a bedroom, especially when his solo career took off like a rocket. He was a chart topper in the R&B world, has managed to cross over to the pop charts here in the states, and has solidified a rabid female following with, among other events, his “ladies only” concerts through the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. There were few equals like him.

His towering career would take a far different turn, however, when he was involved in an automobile accident in 1982, leaving Pendergrass paralyzed from the waste down, confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. After physical therapy, he attempted to resume his career, but the glory days as most of us knew it had all but vanished. He did continue recording, and have had concert dates, but that paled in comparison with his earlier works. This week, tribute is paid to him by my pulling out some of Pendergrass’s finest works, both solo and with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.

I hope you enjoy this week’s show; back next week.

Teddy Bear, rest in peace.

So what do you do when suddenly you find yourself receiving a bit of Christmas music goodies in your inbox, when an opportunity comes to present you with a Christmas mix courtesy of a very respected UK producer? It’s a special Christmas show, that’s what!

The mix came first, then the Christmas music, and then I’ve found a few favorites lying around. Put them all together, and you have 90 minutes of music that should rival that nagging Christmas music playing in malls (well, one can try at least).

The Christmas mix, included as part of the show, comes courtesy of Dr. Rubberfunk (GPS Recordings/Jalapeno). If you’ve been a longtime fan of the show, you’ve heard tunes from him on the show. Known for his very soulful approach to funky breaks and the like, he’s put together a couple of special mixes for the holidays. One of those mixes makes up this week’s guestmix.

There isn’t much else to say, except I hope that you have a great holiday, whichever you choose to celebrate during this time of the year. Back atcha in 2010!

Another year of good music comes to a close, at least for Urban Landscapes.

This week’s show is Part Two of the Most Recommended Music of 2009. The focus is on the singles and EP’s of 2009, and per usual they are far more numerous in terms of selection, compared with the albums from last week. Literally hundreds of singles and EP’s were narrowed down to just over 100. Even then, the picks wouldn’t fit into a three-hour show; that’s right, three hours this week instead of two. So much goodness, and yet the end result is the hallmark of what the radio show is about. It is jazzy and soulful club culture, and you’ll listen to the show in all of its variations (shouts to Marc Mac from 4Hero for that one paraphrase, via Facebook).

Some ground rules about the picks from this show and the show prior. Generally, it goes like this:

The work must have been released in 2009, or at least played in 2009 if it’s unreleased.

A single tune of a two-track (or more) single doesn’t count, as does three singles from an album. I need to hear the whole album, or the whole EP, to make an informed decision on what’s best for the listeners, as well as for yours truly.

Not much to ask, other than pitting quality against quality. I set the bar really high for my picks, be it for the weekly show or for the year-end specials. Because not all of my picks will fit into this show, know that you can view the rest of the picks that gets my highest recommendation at the bottom of the playlist (note: if you don’t see it right away, hold tight – the list will be complete in a day or two).

For many of you, this may be the last Urban Landscapes mailer you’ll be reading before the holidays. I want to take the time to thank you….all of you; the labels, artists/producers, DJs, radio and music promotion companies, the partners who broadcast Urban Landscapes via their radio stations, and the fans. Know that this show would not exist without your support, and I’m truly fortunate to be doing what I most look forward to at least 40 weeks out of the year. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

When Urban Landscapes returns on Thursday January 7th, 2010, it will be 12 years old. It won’t rest on its laurels, though; it’ll be another year of fresh new music, guestmixes, and much more.

Thank you again; enjoy the show, and have a fun and safe set of holidays with you and your loved ones. See you in 2010!

Peace.

2009 is almost over, and that means that it’s time once again to go through the many playlists and charts from this year, narrow the choices, and give you The Most Recommeded Music of 2009. It’s, of course, the music sent to, and played, on the show, by the labels, promotion companies, artists and producers that help make it all possible. There are those standouts, and some of them are showcased this week.

The focus on this show is on the albums. Talking about standouts, not all of them were able to be represented in two-hours. Be sure to check the lists below the playlist for the other 2009 albums that I approve of, and of the choice compilations as well.

Have a listen, and please support the artists and labels by purchasing some of these albums if you don’t have them in your collection already. I like to do my part by celebrating musical excellence on the show, but I’m sure that the artists and labels would appreciate it just as much if you show them your love of the music by buying an album or three.

Next week will be Part Two, focusing on the singles and EP’s that have stood out this year. Meanwhile, enjoy this week’s show, and feel free to pass it on!

Have a good one, in the meantime; peace.

Have a listen, and please support the artists and labels by purchasing some of these albums if you don't have them in your collection already. I like to do my part by celebrating musical excellence on the show, but I'm sure that the artists and labels would appreciate it just as much if you show them your love of the music by buying an album or three.

Next week will be Part Two, focusing on the singles and EP's that have stood out this year. Meanwhile, enjoy this week's show, and feel free to pass it on!

Have a good one, in the meantime; peace.

Another year of Urban Landscapes is almost over.

You’ve been in wait for about three weeks for fresh new music. Were it not for the need to give a proper nod to Domu (listen to the last show if you’ve missed it; worth catching), you would have been treated to such freshness.

This week ended up being a tough one, as this is the last regular show of 2009. I’m sitting on enough material for several more hours of newness, and yet it was tough having to narrow down the selections. Lots of good music had to be set aside for now, but somehow I will find a way to share them in due course.

Meanwhile, this last show of new music is indeed the radioshow (almost) closing the year out in style, full of the eclectic quality goodness that you, dear listeners, expect, and that I enjoy sharing with you. New labels have joined the family, including the likes of Freestyle and Record Kicks, labels that are heavy-hitters in quality. And though I wasn’t able to fit it in this week, Gomma has also joined the roster. Nice to have them in the fold, and I hope you’ll support the labels if you really do enjoy the music.

With the wrap of this week’s show, it’s time now for me to look back at all of the cool music that’s been released this year, and narrow down the selection to a chosen few. It’s the Most Recommended Music of 2009, starting next week. On December 10th, the focus will be on the albums; the singles and EP’s, airing December 17th, will close the show for the year.

Enjoy this week’s broadcast, and we’ll spend the next two shows in the wayback machine starting next week.

Peace.

As I type this, it’s getting closer to the one week mark since Dominic Stanton announced on his blog his retirement from the world of music as a producer and a DJ.

In the special music scene that this show supports, it sent shockwaves around the Internet and throughout the globe. Twitter, Facebook and Myspace were abusing over the news. While it was far from being, say, a Twitter top topic, it was certainly the topic of those whose respect for him runs deep.

Like other pioneering artists in this scene, the man who would later be known as Domu was able to adapt to a new and creative music scene when the UK drum and bass movement started dying down. New classifications of music such as nu-jazz, broken beat, and future soul were being coined for some of the most adventurous and freshest music that the rest of the world haven’t caught onto.

Domu was a most definitive influence on the scene, as many artists past and present played on the radio show over the years will attest. As you’ll hear, he was able to adapt to different genres of music, yet making whatever he chooses to create his own. There’s a soulful warmth to his music that makes much of American-based soul creatively stale and stagnant in comparison.

On this edition of the show, you’ll get a very, very small sample of Domu’s incredible output of music over the 15 years he’s been involved; different styles, and sometimes under different names. To try and represent him properly would take maybe days to do over 24-hour periods, but hopefully these two hours will suffice.

I will have more to say about Domu in the coming days via a blog entry, so look out for that.

The show will take next week off in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday here in the states. The following week will have the last regular show before the two-part broadcast known as The Most Recommended Music of 2009 airs to round out the year. More details are coming.

I hope that you enjoy this special tribute to Domu. Stay good, and I will catch you soon.

Peace.

The year has flew by so far as we approach the holidays, but that doesn’t stop the new music from coming. Believe me, I have some dandy ones for your ears this week, and I hope that you enjoy the musical selection that is coming your way on this edition of the show.

Believe it or not, there aren’t that many shows left for this year. There’s quite a bit of music to still go through, leading to the two-part shows known as The Most Recommended Music of 2009. Dates will be announced soon. All of this will end another year of Urban Landscapes, as January will start the show’s 13th year.

I do my best to reward you with quality music, and wow is it packed with it this week. I think you’ll especially enjoy the first hour, with different variants of world sounds in the mix. And of course, the second hour will hopefully have you move your feet, bob your head, or whatever involuntary action the beats do to your body. And I can’t neglect the in-betweens….no fillers here.

So unwind, and let the music take you on another two-hour trip into the world of jazzy, soulful, and even worldly club culture that is Urban Landscapes.

Soak it up, and I’ll catch you next week.

I have a backlog of some killer, killer music, and yet this week you are only going to get a very teeny, weeny small taste of it from me.

Why?

Because this week, I’m turning over a good portion of the show to give you an exclusive Urban Landscapes guestmix from the quartet known as Circle of Funk. If you’ve been listening to the show over the last few months, you may know that I’ve dropped some heavy house pressure from these lads, basing themselves between London and Brighton in the UK. The tunes in question, “M4 Movements” and “London Groove” have gone well in the underground clubs, are also part of the mix. You’ll hear a mixture of dope classics and groovy newness. Big shouts to the guys, and especially to Lee and Paul, who are fans of the show, for taking the time to put together the mix.

So here’s hoping that you’ll enjoy the goods on this week’s edition of Urban Landscapes. A bunch of heaviness is in store for you next week, so be sure to tune in on-air or online. Be good!

Peace.
